Aquired traits arent passed onto offspring and natural selection takes place over a long period of time over many generations so only genetic traits can change over a period of time whereas aquired traits, eg a lost limb, are random and one off

Why are only inherited traits,not acquired ones,necessary for the process of natural selection?
