How is the membrane surface area increased within cells and organelles

The way how the membrane surface area can be increased within cells and organelles is by creating folds also called invaginations. What happens in, a certain part of membrane or the organelle becomes folded. Another fold is then added and this is continued. This is how the surface area can be increased.
