Lets look at the information we have:-
6 times as many dogs as cats.
48 dogs in the pet store
Now we will divide to see how many cats there are in the store.
48 ÷ 6 = 8
8 cats in the pet store
CHECK OUR WORK:-
8 × 6 = 48
We were
RIGHT!!!
So,
8
cats
in the pet store.

Thank you for editing your question. The answer is that since there are x cats and 6x dogs, there are 6x = 48 dogs. Dividing each side by 6, we get that x = 8, which is the number of cats. There are 8 cats at the pet store.
