What legal tools did the Roman Republic used to uphold the rule of law

Romans could trial and sentence people. They could be either trown into jails which they had set up at the time, or face even worse sentences, obviously depending on what the person was charged of. The sentence depended on the severity of the crime but there were also exceptions sometimes which lead to a different sentence.
