During IVF, an egg is removed from a woman’s ovaries. This egg is fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. Then, the fertilised egg is put back in the woman's uterus to grow as if the fertilisation had occurred naturally. Often more than one fertilised egg is put back, to offer the best chance of success.
