Explain why it does not matter what letter or symbol is used to find an unknown number

It's because the letter represents a number, so it doesn't matter what letter.

A variable represents an unknown quantity.  No matter which variable you use, it will represent the same unknown quantity, and the same process will be used to solve the problem.  Which variable you use is irrelevant.
