The Spanish american war took place on colonies owned by Spain and America, so it's Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, that are actually located in Asia which is odd considering everyone expects it's going to be just in the Americas. The islands wanted independence from Spain and the US supported them in it.
