When MgCO3(s) is strongly heated, it produces solid MgO as gaseous CO2 is driven off.

Does the oxidation number of carbon change upon the  formation of CO2?

MgCO_3--^T-->MgO + CO_2\uparrow

the oxidation number of carbon in MgCO3 = +IV
the oxidation number of carbon in CO2 = +IV

so, there is no change
