For sexual reproduction there has to be 2 parents. One male and the other female. The father's cell will determine the gender of the organism. This is because a fathers cell has a Y & an X, but the mother has 2 X's. So 1 x goes from the mother but if the father give the Y the organism would be male but if the father gives an X then the organism will be female.

Hope I helped ya!
