Irony
If a writer makes a forceful contrast between expectations and reality creating a surprise ending for readers, he or she is using the literary device called irony. A literary device refers to the structures used by writers in their works to relay his or her messages. It helps readers appreciate, interpret and analyze the writer’s literary work. Irony is one of the many literary devices. In definition, irony is the expression of one’s meaning by using language that typically means the opposite, thus creating a humorous or emphatic effect.
