Why does cellular respiration add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, but photosynthesis does not?

If I'm not mistaken it is because in order for respiration to occur it requires oxygen before releasing carbon dioxide where as when photosynthesis takes place the plant absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen into the atmosphere
