How were the social classes divided in Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas?

They were divided according to the origin of the people: people born in Europe (Peninsulares) on top of the hierarchy, then their children born in the New World ( criollos), then mixed children of Europeans and other peoples, then the Indigenous and other people of colour.
