if we divide by a fraction, we can instead multiply by it's inverse:


`(9)/(12)/ (3)/(12) = (9)/(12) * (12)/(3)`

so now we count:


`(9)/(12) * (12)/(3) =(9)/(1) * (1)/(3)=3`

so we can cut exactly 3 pieces!
