The main factors were that they had an outstanding army compared to their competitors, together with well-disciplined troops and good generals. Another was that they had a very good location for trading with other nations, but this location also enabled them to gain a lot of ground in various territories relatively fast.

Both of these factors influenced the speed by which Rome expanded so quickly very drastically.
