The first battle of the Civil War took place when Confederate troops fired on and took over Fort Sumter.  This was called the Battle of Fort Sumter.  It took place in Charleston, South Carolina on April 12, 1861.  It was a siege that lasted 2 days and ended in a Confederate victory.
