The Maya Civilization was built in the steamy rain forests of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Maya are renown for their writing system, as well as for their art, architecture, mathematical and astronomical systems. They were not only based in the Yucatan Peninsula, but also lived in places outside of southeastern Mexico, such as Belize and Guatemala.
