9/16 + 1/2 =
First find the lcm of both denominators
16 2
32 4
48 6
8

16
You choose the lowest one that 16 and 2 will divide into = 16. 1/2 = 8/16.
So your sum is 9/16 + 8/16 = 17/16
You simplify this fraction to become 1 1/16.
