Why do you think Russell ends Act 1 with the line

bright new day'? Why might this be ironic?

Answer:

Because we know that the boys will meet again and later find out they are brothers and subsequently die. This is a technique called dramatic irony as the audience knows that the boys die. Bright new day suggests that the next act will be a happy one but the audience know better.
