Why are common names not a good reference to a species

Common names are not a good reference to a species because not only are they not particularly specific (for example, if you referred to a bear, which one of the multiple bear species are you discussing?), but they also cannot be translated across borders where English is not commonly spoken which could cause miscommunication.
