The main way in which the political, economic, and diplomatic crisis of the 1780s shaped the provisions of the constitution is that they showed that the present government under the Articles of Confederation was ill equipped to do things like put down rebellions, pay back the nation's debt, and fight wars--leading to the Constitution giving the new government far more power.
