A navigational tool with a needle, would most likely be a compass. They were invented and used in the Global Age. Compass's always point North, so they directed sailors in the right direction, across seas.

It is called a "compass". It navigates you to the north (which is the red needle). This happens due to the magnetic force of the earth attracted to the compass
