In more general terms, a line of demarcation is a line that will be, or is likely to become a border, but is not yet one. it can be a line that is reached in a compromise in a ceasefire, but one that it not officially accepted as a border (yet).

Originally, it was drawn in 1493 and approved by the Pope to divide the World between the Spanish and the Portuguese.
