The first thing to do is to make the denominators. Since 3 goes into 6, the first fraction should simply be doubled:
1/3 + 5/6 = 2/6 + 5/6
5 + 2 = 7
7/6
1/3 + 5/6 = 1 1/6 or 7/6

Change 1/3 to 2/6 in order to have a common denominator.
Then add the numerators (2 and 5) and keep the denominator.
