Feelings of nostalgia would force a character or protagonist to continue to develop the present and future in order to potentially seek out the reasons for the nostalgia. If there is a happy memory or a memory of a more stable time in their life, they would use this as impetus to create new memories and grow in the future so that they may recreate some of what they are yearning for.
