What physical feature formed the southern boundary of the Roman empire

Originally, it was the Mediterranean: and the Roman empire was on the Italian peninsula.

After they conquered the sea, the border was the desert (the Sahara Desert): a very difficult area to go through: it both protected the empire and limited it.
