I remember it like this: I saw 9/11 attacks in Europe AFTER i came back from school: so Europe, to the east of US, is much be more "advanced" in time. So the more east you go: the later it is, the more west you go, the earlier it is.

So if you travel west, you will be an hour earlier, so the time is one hour behind.
