The English-speaking population first came to Australia after it was discovered by the Dutch and claimed by the British, but Australia was a penal colony and this was mainly how it's English-speaking population first came to Australia. A penal colony is when you send convicted criminals or people regarded as undesirable to a colony, so for Australia this specifically meant convicted criminals and prisoners of war from Ireland.
