8 less means subtracting 8 from ___.
The product of 5 and -4 is (5×-4)
So you want to subtract 8 from (5×-4)
(5×-4)-8, -20-8=-28

So it says 8 less than, meaning 8 minus the product of 5 and -4, so literally it means subtract 8 from 5X-4
8-5*-4
