The process of comparing what you already know with new information is known as critical thinking.  Critical thinking is the ability to analyze, assimilate and compare current information with new information. It is a disciplined way of thinking that asks questions and finds answers to the questions asked. The question that needs to be asked is "Does the new information add value to my knowledge or does it detract from my current knowledge?". Critical thinking allows you to formulate a structured argument helps you to  communicate your ideas clearing and succinctly.
