I believe that Powhatan's overall message to John Smith was of the necessity for peace between men. A particularly poignant line is 'Why should you take by force that from us which you can have by love?'. Powhatan was concerned that after his death, good relations would continue as they did at the end of his life, and he needed to communicate this to John Smith to lay the groundwork for a continuation of this peace.
