When they are equal, the fraction can be simplified to 1

When the numerator is larger than the denominator, it is a mixed number

When the numerator and denominator of a fraction are equal, the fraction is equal to 1.
When the numerator is greater then the denominator the fracion is called an "improper fraction". It represents a number greater then or equal to 1 and isnt neccasarily a whole number. It can also be written as a mixed number.
