What was the main way that African American farmers got out of the debt that they incurred as sharecroppers?

They worked in factories to earn extra wages to pay off their debts.

The primary way this happened, although not always effective, was that they would buy out their share of the farm land after exhaustive years of labor. This was often impossible for many, however.
