When people had a spoken language, they could better communicate with one another. This led their skills to improve, because now they could teach each other. Before, it was hard to instruct someone on how to do something, when they couldn't talk. Also, it allowed people to spread their beliefs more widely, because now they could describe them in a way that made sense to others. It created a great diversity within the population.
