Why did the europeans want an all water route to asia

Europeans wanted to have access to certain items, mostly tea and spices. They had access to these goods already, but they arrived through land, and on the way they were taxed, and were therefore expensive. Europeans were hoping that trading with the Indians directly would be cheaper.
