I think you meant the Nuremberg trials (Nuremberg; after the city).

Those trials were important because they showed to the worlds that the deeds committed during the war and in the name of one's country can still be prosecuted: noone is free of responsibility. It send a message to future leaders that they are not above the (international) law.
