A powerful sultan in the Ottoman Empire was Mehmet II also known as Mehmed the Conqueror. He ended the Byzantine Empire and conquered Constantinople (which was then the capital of the Ottoman Empire). Mehmed is still considered a highly influential and inspirational figure in modern-day Turkey and many sites around the country are named after him.
