Explain why the greatest common factor of two numbers is sometimes 1

'1' is a common factor of ALL numbers. If both numbers are primes, then there are never any other factors but '1'. And even if neither number is prime, there MAY not be any other factors. For example, 9 and 22 are not prime numbers, but they still share no other factor except '1'.
