between the Han and the Sui the country was split into smaller regions and kingdoms, which were in a state of conflict. This time was known as the "Period of Disunity"- there was no one China, but many smaller places.

At the time that the Han dynasty fell, which was around 220, China began in a extensive period of rivalry, invasion and warfare with other nations. After that, there was a period called the "Period of Disunity", which ended around 589 where the Sui dynasty began.
