From that list, one of the leaders of Congressional Reconstruction was C. Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens was a member of the Radical Republicans who sought harsh punishments and a great deal of oversight when dealing with the Southern states as they re-entered the Union following the Civil War as opposed to President Andrew Johnson's more lenient standards under the earlier form of Presidential Reconstruction.
