In England, the concept of individual rights can be traced back to the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was a charter that gradually became a big part of political life in England. It stated the rights of individuals, the rights of the church and of the nobility. It is held very highly today and although the United Kingdom does not have a written constitution, politicians often cite parts of the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta also inspired the Constitution of the United States.
