For the first hundred years of the United States, only white males were able to vote. Since then, amendments to the Constitution have made it so that any citizen aged 18 or older can vote. Which amendments granted different groups the right to vote? Why were amendments needed to expand voting rights?

Answer:

15th (all races can vote), 19th (women can vote), 26th (18 and older can vote). The amendments were made, because the nation was changing, bringing more people their rights and giving more equality.

Amendment #19 gave women the right to vote

Amendment 23 gave the people of Washington D.C. the right to vote

Amendment 24 abolished poll taxes used to keep black people from voting

Amendment 26 lowered voting age to age 18

The amendments were needed to expand voting rights because each of these groups of people did not qualify for voting privileges.
