There are many types of white blood cells that have the ability to consume different types of microorganisms. However, most of these types of white blood cells only tend to consume certain types of microorganisms. However in the case of infection, there is one type of white blood cell that will consume any type of microorganism. This is called the macrophages. If you think of the immune system and white blood cells as an army, the macrophages are the front lines, taking out anything they can so the specialized groups can take care of anything that the macrophages can't.
