The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first law in the history of the United States which prohibited one ethnic group from entering the country, although it stated that it was for laborers only. It was a federal law and restricted the movement of free immigration for what was supposed to be ten years, although the act was extended until 1902. It was stated that the act was made to preserve American jobs for the Americans.
