Who was the first holy roman emperor and how did he get that title

Charlemagne was the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, given the title by the Pope Leo III on Christmas in 800 AD. He was given it because Charlemagne's father gave the territory of and around Rome to the Pope as a fief.
