How did Diocletian succeed in preserving the empire?

Some factors that contributed to this were:
1. Diocletian was a very strict ruler and had a good control over his subjects. He was leaning towards an absolute power and called himself an autocrat.
2. Diocletian has doubled the size of the army (and had the army in good control)
