Why did some Southern leaders want to develop industry in the South?

In simple terms the south could not just survive on agriculture.

They had to rely on the North or other foreign countries to supply them with other necessities.

The North was what boosted the South's economy and the North was also more organized/unified.

If southerners had their own industries they could become more unified and not have to rely on the north to boost their economy.
