The most important difference between invertebrates and vertebrates is C. vertebrates contain a backbone, while invertebrates do not. The word vertebrae in Latin refers to the spine and all bones surrounding it, so obviously vertebrates are going to have a spine. Invertebrates do not have it, which the name itself suggests.
