The primary purpose of the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz was to direct national attention to the federal government's inadequacy and mishandling of tribal affairs. The principle behind the occupation was that if the federal government could illegally take and occupy tribal land, tribal members could just as easily take and occupy federal land (since Alcatraz was federal property).
