How did the government attempt to shape public opinion during the Cold War?

The government used mostly propaganda to shape the public option - that is, they provided biased and selective information, mostly focusing on the fact that communism was to be seen in a negative light. This included government publications, but also media, both private and public. For example, many explicitly anti-communist movies were made.
