Which geographic factor best explains China's ability to influence the cultural development of Japan

I am thinking that it would be the size of China (as compared to Japan) and it's location on the mainland (so having contact with other civilizations and possibly getting stronger because of this) and so close to Japan too (so they're likely to have traveled there a lot)
